First Look

The page you are viewing is divided into different components. The central part of the page, in which this text is located, is called the page's module space. This is usually the main focus of the display in a Xaraya site. The areas around the module space, such as the menu to the left, or the header and footer of the page, are called blocks.

Xaraya sites are conceptually divided into two areas. The front end or user area is generally visible to anyonymous visitors or registered users of the site. The back end or admin area, is usually only accessible to registered administrators of the site. You can get to the back end from this page by clicking on the [Back end] link to the left.

The front end display can be visually changed by the use of themes to meet the specific requirements of a site. In the (currently active) Default theme, the module space is of alimited width in the center of the screen. For the back end display, not being publicly visible, it is usually convenient to leave the menu inaleft column and have the module space run the full screen width.

The Basic Components

You add functionality to your Xaraya site by installing modules, and visual diversity by using themes.

The basic Xaraya installation is deliberately maintained lean. The 9 core modules initially installed by the installer module are meant to contain the basic functionality you need to be able to build more complex sites and applications on:

• The Base module manages the sitewide settings of Xaraya.
• The Blocks module lets you create and manage blocks.
• The DynamicData module makesit possible to create custom objects for your applications.
• The Mail module gives Xaraya basic mail functionality.
• The Modules module lets you install and manage additional modules.
• The Privileges module manages the permissions users have on your site.
• The Roles module manages users and their profiles.
• The Themes module lets you install and manage additional themes.

The basic Xaraya installation contains 5 themes

• The installer theme which is used by the installer module when Xaraya is installed.
• The default theme is used by default when Xaraya runs..
• The Xaraya_Classic theme is the standard theme from earlier versions of Xaraya.
• The rss theme can be used for displaying rss blocks.
• The print theme can be used when printing page.
